Invitation Day
Sunday 6th September, 2009
Invitation Day goes back quite a long way, being introduced in 1971. For the last couple of years, we have not allowed home pairings, but the low turn-out means that we will probably have a rethink for next year.
Luckily the weather was reasonable all-day so we didn't have to deploy the roof which we apparently bought from the Millenium Dome. At least that's what that one gullible visitor had been told - it would be ungallant of me to name the lady, but a clue is that she had also been warned that she wouldn't be able to not to smoke if the roof was closed!
Scoring was scoring if unspectacular, with just 3 sub-50 nett scores. However, Richard Broadley overcame a poor start, (5 at the first hole), to be 2 under gross after 12 holes, but slipped a little when threatening Nigel Bell's course record of 51. Still a gross 54 off a handicap of plus one, meant 35 stableford points and the prize for best visitor. His partner, Nik Kelly managed to come in on a few holes and their betterball gross score of 51 was easily the best of the day. Nik also hit an excellent shot on the 8th to just 181/2" to win that nearest pin prize - an aid to putting practice. It was good to see quite a few lady visitors on the day, and Julia Stanger was closest to the 18th hole at 43", winning a putter.
The overall prize went to two juniors, Nathan Kerrod and Nick Taylor who complemented each other nicely to end up with 45 nett and a 3 shot victory from Richard Squire and Dave Bland who were runners-up with 48. The full nett results were:-
